The Alumni Complex is a unique project in that it consists of 2 separate entities, namely the new Shaw Foundation Alumni House (SFAH) and the redeveloped Kent Ridge Guild House (KRGH). Both are related to and complemented each other. It is intended to be "a singular meeting point for alumni and friends to strengthen their social and professional ties" and "stay connected to their alma mater."

The design has effectively addressed and interpreted various criteria as set forth in the early competition brief such as the 'spawning ground' idea, waterways, courtyard concept and Home on Campus. Sloping terrain and contour of the campus ground is a major challenge in the spatial planning and organization, the design has managed to connect the various levels and spaces smoothly and seamlessly, weaved them together to form plazas, inner courts, internal spaces and terraces etc.

Various parties involved i.e. NUSS, OAR, OED, the President's Office, Users, etc to refine the design and implement cost control.

Of key importance is the creation of a green, meditative open space between the 2 buildings, which is The Alumni Terrace. While it sets the 2 buildings apart, it also brings both buildings together as a shared open space. It is a common ground that symbolizes the coming together of different generations of people, views and thoughts, exchanges and dialogues and moving forwards with a shared vision and goal. It is barrier-free and easily accessible by all. Flowering plants, shrubs and trees soften the terraces while sculptures and artworks reminded alumni of their important contributions and past heritages.

The Alumni Terrace is a meeting place and a focal point at the heart of this Complex.

The completion of the Alumni Complex (Phase 1 & 2) has met the Concept Brief requirements to bring the alumni, NUSS members, faculty staff, students and visitors back to the university campus, creating a home on campus.
